Michael was called to the Bar in 2008 and completed pupillage at the intellectual property specialist set 11 South Square in 2009-2010.  He joined the IP team at 13 Old Square in October 2010 as a 3rd six pupil and became a member of chambers in 2011. 

Experience:

Michael specialises in all aspects of intellectual property, media and entertainment and IT law.  
Recently, he has drafted evidence in a successful patent restoration case and an ongoing reinstatement application, as well as assisting members of chambers on various IP matters.
During pupillage, Michael worked on a variety of matters in all of the areas of intellectual property.  In particular, he was involved in the following cases:

Grimme Landmaschinenfabrik GmbH v Scott [2009] EWHC 2691 (Pat) - Four-day patent trial concerning a mechanical patent for agricultural machinery. 

Alan Nuttall Ltd v Fri-Jado UK Ltd [2009] EWCA Civ 1520 – Appeal against findings of infringement of a patent for a hot food cabinet.

Actavis UK Ltd v Novartis AG [2010] EWCA Civ 82 – Appeal against a finding of invalidity for a sustained release formulation for a fluvastatin.

HTC Corporation v Yozmot 33 Ltd. [2010] EWHC 786 (Pat) - Three-day patent trial concerning personalised mobile telephone ringers.

Global Coal Ltd v London Commodity Brokers [2010] EWHC 1347 (Ch) - Trial of a preliminary contractual issue in a claim with IP and competition issues.

Alder Gill v Saxon HC09C01768 - Trial of copyright and contractual issues regarding a software system for a retailer.

Dyson v Vax [2010] EWHC 1923 (Pat) - Four-day UK registered design trial involving the design for Dyson’s DC02 vacuum cleaner.

Education and life before the Bar :
Michael was awarded an MSci in Theoretical Physics by the University of Durham in 2001. After graduating he spent 8 years as an IT engineer specialising in infrastructure for a variety of City firms and government departments.  During this time he undertook the GDL and BVC part-time at BPP.

Personal:
Outside of chambers Michael enjoys amateur dramatics and musical theatre.  His recent roles include Eddie in the Heather Brothers’ “A Slice of Saturday Night” and the General in “Seussical”.
