Welcome to Thirteen Old Square®, a set of barristers in London specialising in Chancery and Commercial Law.

Chambers was established in 2004 by leading QC, John McDonnell, with the aim of combining the best traditions of the English Bar with a fully commercial approach and the most modern technology. We seek to achieve the highest standards of objectivity in our advice, tenacity in defence of our clients’ interests, awareness of their business requirements, and efficiency in our service.

We have 26 barristers, ranging from highly experienced practitioners to junior members with outstanding qualifications, and a first-rate team of clerks led by Justin Brown. We provide legal advice and draft documents in both contentious and non-contentious matters, and represent clients in litigation, inquiries, arbitrations and mediations. Our expertise and facilities enable us to provide effective representation in proceedings ranging from urgent applications for injunctions (including freezing or search orders) to complex trials and arbitrations. Senior members also act as arbitrators and mediators. For further information about our areas of expertise, click here or contact our clerks.

We are all practising members of the English Bar; and some of us also have qualifications or experience in other legal systems. We are frequently instructed in international or multi-jurisdictional cases involving issues of conflict of laws and foreign laws. We represent clients in English, European and International courts and tribunals, as well courts and tribunals in a number of other countries. Members are fluent or have a working knowledge of a variety of languages. Further details of our experience and knowledge of other legal systems, jurisdictions and languages can be found here.

We are normally instructed by lawyers or other professional advisers based in England or other countries; some members can also be instructed directly. We accept instructions in accordance with the Code of Practice of the English Bar. For further information about instructing us, click here or contact our clerks.

The Chambers is in a historic location in the heart of Lincoln’s Inn next to the Royal Courts of Justice. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and constructed in 1880, the premises have been refurbished to provide modern office facilities while retaining attractive period features.
